4 Of The Best Small Pets For Your Kids

February 3, 2023 by Jennifer Wood

Most children ask for a pet when they are young. Parents must determine whether the child is ready to take on the responsibility of caring for an animal. Once it has been determined the child is mature enough, it’s time to pick a pet. The following small pets are among the best for kids.

Rabbits Are Great for Kids

If a child wants a pet, consider a rabbit. In fact, for children with allergies, a rabbit is ideal, as the animal may be more hypoallergenic. Bunnies are typically gentle and easy to care for. The right animal will be very loving and affectionate with children and may even attempt to jump in the child’s arms.

The child can easily care for the animal. They will need to feed and water the bunny regularly and change the bedding. Find rabbit bedding here. In addition, bunnies often like to walk on a leash, although a parent should be present with the child.

How Often To Feed Goldfish

Fish Aren’t Just for Dinner

Many parents decide on a fish for their child’s first pet. If the child diligently cares for the fish, the parent may allow them to graduate to an animal that requires more attention. Parents will need to clean the tank, but that isn’t a daily or weekly chore. As the child grows, they can help with this task, although adult supervision will still be needed.

Goldfish and guppies are great starter fish, and young children will often spend hours watching them move around the bowl. However, take care with younger children and keep the fish food where they cannot reach it. Toddlers and young school-age children have a tendency to overfeed the fish, which can harm them.

Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs have a sweet disposition and will allow children to handle them regularly. In fact, these pets often cuddle their owners much like dogs do. Parents who are concerned about hamsters and their tendency to become aggressive will find a guinea pig to be a good alternative. They are very easygoing, which is what is needed when the pet will be for a young child.

Consider a Chinchilla

Many parents never consider a chinchilla when choosing a pet for their child, but they should. While parents must handle much of the care for the animal, particularly with younger kids, chinchillas come with many advantages.

Although it will take some time for the chinchilla to become acclimated to the household, once they do, they snuggle up with the owners. They are very social animals and they are curious. They enjoy exploring the household with the child and trying new things. As they can jump as high as six feet in the air, very few places in the home are off limits to them. If this sounds like your type of pet be sure to get these supplies.

Don’t rush the process of getting a pet. If there is any doubt regarding whether the child is ready, invest in fish. They require very little care and will allow parents to see what the child is ready for. If the child cares for the fish properly, it’s time to consider a rabbit, a chinchilla, or another small animal. The child is ready to love the new family member and ensure their needs are met.
