Things To Remember When Looking For The Best Food For German Shepherd Puppy And Pomeranian

When buying dog food, it is important that you know how to read and check labels, particularly the ingredients list. There are both must-have and must-not-have ingredients, so, let us take a look at them all.

Ingredients To Look For

First, be sure to look for the following:

Animal Protein

More often than not, the best dog food names an animal protein as its primary ingredient. Great examples include beef, chicken, lamb, salmon, turkey, among others. As much as possible, you would want to avoid meat because it is a low-quality source of protein for dogs.

Animal Protein Meal

A dog food gets better when its secondary ingredient is an animal protein meal. It optimizes the overall protein content of the product. Since fresh animal protein sources contain a lot of water, it is best to support it with a meal coming from the same animal. If the label names turkey as its main ingredient, then, it should be followed by a turkey meal.

By the way, when we say meal, we refer to an animal’s bones, connective tissues, meats, and skin that have been rendered.

Carbohydrate Source

Excellent carbohydrate sources for dogs include beans, corn, grains, potatoes, and wheat. However, some dogs might be allergic to corn, grains, and wheat. In such cases, your only best bet are potatoes. A dog food may contain more than one type of potato to make up for the lack of other carbohydrate sources.

Fruits and Vegetables

While not urgently necessary, fruits and vegetables still improve the overall quality of a dog food. They are rich in naturally occurring vitamins and minerals that may not be found in other ingredients. So, instead of injecting dog food with synthetic fillers, why not just infuse formulas with fruits and vegetables?

Oils

Fats and oils are associated with a bad reputation. They are often regarded unhealthy and without benefits. It is about time that we wake up from this misconception. The truth is that certain fatty acids deliver nutritional value. Aside from maintaining your pet’s coat and skin, they also encourage the absorption of vitamins. Some of the most common fats found in dog food include omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, chicken fat, cottonseed oil, fish oil, vegetable oil, among others.

Ingredients To Avoid

Then, you will know that it is time to think twice about a product when it contains even at least one of the following:

Artificial Colors, Flavors, and Preservatives

There are different types of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. While they all improve the superficial characteristics of a dog food, they still come with a lot of disadvantages.

A manufacturer may not explicitly put the word artificial in their labels given the negative connotations. So, be on the lookout for colors such as Blue #2, Red #40, and Yellow #5. In the 1970s, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially banned Red #2 and Violet #1, both of which had been widely used by dog food manufacturers in the past.

Meanwhile, artificial flavors include unhealthy and unnecessary fats, livers, and sugars that hopefully encourage pets to eat. MSG is one of those unhelpful ingredients you need to stay away from.

Lastly, artificial preservatives include BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, among others. Dog food manufacturers add these harmful ingredients in their formulas to maintain shelf lives. When your pet consumes these, he or she may suffer from allergic reactions, skin dryness, dental problems, degenerative organ dysfunctions, among others.

Best food for German Shepherd-2

Corn

Corn, especially in the forms of corn syrup and whole grain corn, is toxic for pets. Both forms of corn ingredients are unnecessary and do not come with nutritional value. Corn syrup, for example, just sweetens the food without providing any benefits. Basically, dog food manufacturers add corn as cheap fillers to increase protein content unnaturally.

Byproduct Meal

Do not be confused. Byproduct meals are unnecessary protein sources.

When we say byproduct meal, we are referring to clean, non-rendered animal parts such as blood, bone, brain, intestines, kidneys, lungs, spleen, among others. By infusing their products with these, dog food manufacturers increase protein content without regard to high quality. It allows them to attract consumers without having to spend too much on high-quality production.

The same is true for animal byproduct meals. The only exception is that animal byproduct meals are rendered.

Grain

Grains are excellent sources of carbohydrates. Also, dogs are able to metabolize them easier than other carbohydrate sources. However, many dogs are allergic to grains, which is why a number of pet parents prefer grain-free dog food.

So, if you wish to feed your pet with a dog food that contains grains, it is highly recommended that you consult the vet first. There is no harm in making sure, after all.

Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) Compliance

The AAFCO establishes the complete guidelines for dog food manufacturers. Simply speaking, the entity regulates their manufacturing standards and food labeling.

Labels are crucial, which is why the AAFCO has set certain standards regarding the matter. If a manufacturer claims that:

1. A dog food has one ingredient, it must contain at least 95% of such ingredient

2. A dog food has a primary blend of more than one ingredients, it must contain at least 95% of such blend;

3. A dog food is a “dinner”, “entree”, or “platter” of a particular ingredient, it must contain at least 25% of such ingredient; and

4. A dog food comes “with” a particular ingredient, it must contain 3% of such ingredient.

Having an AAFCO seal gives a dog food a particular edge over competing products that do not come with it. Why? It is a guarantee that a product has undergone rigorous standard procedures and tests. More importantly, it means that a dog food is able to provide and meet a pet’s nutritional needs.
